Water damage prevention

Water damage prevention
Protecting your wood begins with taking preventative measures. Check your home for leaks and cracks. Windows and doors are some of the most vulnerable areas. Check your roof for leaks. If your home has a chimney, it is essential that this area be checked. Check attic and plumbing vents for signs of watermarks or leakage. The plumbing can also cause water damage if it isn't working properly. Check for leaking faucets or sweating pipes. If there is rust on the floor around the water heater, then this is a sign of leakage.

Monitor the humidity level in your home. If you notice condensation building on the windows or a musty smell, there might too much moisture in your home. This can seep into the wood slowly and cause damage.
Check your basements for signs of moisture. Make sure the windows and doors have flood shields to keep water from entering. Make sure the sub-pump in your home is working in the event of flooding. This will get the moisture out quickly so minimal damage occurs.
Taking preventative measures can accomplish a lot, but sooner or later, water will likely come into contact with your wood. Any spills need to be cleaned up immediately, even if they are minor. Water can seep into the wood and start the damage. Make sure it is dried thoroughly, leaving no moist patches.
